  • SQL Server Experts Breakfast Panel at the US PASS SUMMIT!

    I'm going to be attending the PASS Summit in Seattle this November which is looking like its going to be legendary both in size and content, While you're there there are a number of special events, including an expert panel focussed on automating SQL Server processes that Quest Software is sponsoring.

    Irrelevant? Wrong! When you as a DBA can redirect your time to process and business improvements, you've got more time once automation is implemented to focus on the value add (but still extremely important) stuff like performance tuning, disaster recovery planning, coffee making and closing off feature requests!

    There are some gotcha's though... like:

    • Making the automation tools too complex;
    • Spending more time on debugging the tools than working on your value add intiatives;
    • Not planning for scale;
    • Reinventing the wheel, when others have covered that ground before;
    • Forgetting about historical logging and reporting.

     The experts you'll be able to drill with your questions:

    • Allen White, SQL Server MVP and Trainer for Scalability Experts (moderator)
    • Kevin Kline, SQL Server MVP and Technical Strategy Manager, Quest Software
    • Brent Ozar, SQL Server Domain Expert, Quest Software
    • Buck Woody, Program Manager, SQL Server, Microsoft
    • Dan Jones, Product Manager, SQL Server, Microsoft
    • Thomas LaRock, Database Engineering Lead, ING Investment Management
    • Charley HananiaProduction Product Owner, SQL Server, UBS

    Triggered your interest? If so, come and tell us about your experiences and hear about some of ours, as well as what we've seen work, fail and struggle in the past.

    When:

    Thursday, November 20, 2008
    7:00 - 8:30 a.m. (breakfast served until 7:30)

    Where:

    Seattle Convention Center
    Room 613 (6th floor)

    From what I hear, seats are filling fast, so you'd better RSVP online for the event soon...

  • SQL Server Club: September 2008

    I was fortunate enough to have been invited to speak again at the SQL Server Club, which is a Quest sponsored event, focused on Enterprise-class SQL Server topics.

    The focus of this event was SQL Server Performance and it was thoroughly enjoyable presenting sessions alongside all round nice guy and SQL Server Wizard, Brent Ozar.

    What I truly appreciated was the value of the round-table type discussions we had during the presentations, something that you don't get many opportunities to be a part of and learn from.

    The presentations covered were:

    1. Got Performance Headaches? Get Permanent Relief: Detect, Diagnose and Resolve the Pain
    2. Performance Management Methodologies and Enhancements in SQL Server
    3. SQL Server Performance Baselining, Benchmarking and Monitoring

    Here's the link to my presentation on "Performance Management Methodologies and Enhancements in SQL Server".

    Let me know if you're interested in getting the other presentations and I'll post links to them as well.

  • Swiss PASS Chapter: October 2008 Meeting

    Hi All,

    As promised I'm posting the 2 presentations from the last meeting:

    1. SQL Server 2008 – Business Intelligence, presented by Bernd Schneider (Thanks again for taking the time Bernd!)

    New features like improved cube designers, MOLAP enabled write-back capabilities, easy creation and deployment of reports were covered in the session.

    2. SQL Server 2008 – Management Studio's New Features, presented by me.

    This session delved into some of the top changes that have been brought into SQL Server Management Studio such as:

    • Activity Monitor
    • Object Explorer Details
    • Object Searc
    • Server Facet
    • Multi-Server Queries
    • Intellisens
    • T-SQL Debugge
    • Object Dependency Viewer

    The presentations are saved as PDF, looking forward to seeing you all again next session (Expected to be 1st Tuesday in December 2008)!

    Thanks again to Digicomp our location sponsors, SwissITPro as we're its SQL Server Special Interest Group, and Microsoft of course for their strong partnership and continued support of our activities.

    Additional Notes:

    • A noteworthy comment from Daniel Steiner was that CU1 is recommended for install prior to installing the Tools. Fortunately My install went pretty smoothly without it :o)
    • Another question that I have not investigated fully yet, but we hinted towards it during Q&A was whether there's a performance hit when using multiserver queries, as it determines what databases are available within each instance in the multi-server set. The gut feel from the demo was that it gathers the data when you establish a multiserver query connection, and so time to open a query would be impacted both by the number of connections and the relative bandwidth performance you're getting to the instances themselves.
    • Save the date: The European PASS Conference for 2008 was a roaring success, and we're in the middle of planning the 2009 Conference! Go to the http://www.european-pass-conference.com/ for details, and email me if you'd like to help with the event's organisation!

    Cheers!
